New Year's Resolutions

With permission of the author, Dr. Sharon, I wanted to share this with you. I love the feeling I got when I read these.

“8 in 2008” We Can Do This!
Sharon D. Allison-Ottey, MD
www.sharondeniseallisonottey.com

As we begin the New Year, many of us will make resolutions that we know will be a memory by January 5th. This year, I want us to throw out that foolishness and just commit to "8 for 2008". These are simple things that can change your life forever!

1. I WILL take 15 minutes in the morning just for me. I will take some deep breaths and clear my head without husband/wife, boyfriend/girlfriend, child, parent, or anyone else hanging around.

2. I WILL schedule an appointment with my doctor for a full physical exam and I will be prepared to ask questions.

3. I WILL not let anyone speak negativity into my life. I will stay strong and positive and get rid of anyone that is not supportive of ME!

4. I WILL purpose to do something unexpected and good for someone else at least once month. I will not brag or broadcast my good deeds.

5. I WILL commit to trying my BEST to exercise at least three times a week, with the goal of making this part of my daily life.

6. I WILL commit to trying my BEST to kick my junk food, fried food, sodas, fatty/yummy desserts habit. I will limit myself to two small guilt free splurges a week ONLY if I keep my exercise goals.

7. I WILL spend time each day in prayer and meditation. I will thank God each day for allowing me to still breathe, be in my right mind and for the measure of health that He's given me. I will pray for others and for this world. I will seek Him first as I seek and work for better health and wholeness.

8. No matter what my weight, my physical appearance, my education, my income, my family background, my present state in life; I WILL tell myself each and every day that God loves ME, I love ME and I am wonderfully and phenomenally made! I KNOW that I am a Queen/King and I will walk, talk and be treated like the royalty that I am.

If You See This Movie, Bring a Box of Tissues

Like many people, I like to see movies during the week between Christmas and New Year's. This past week, I managed to catch two. One was Charlie Wilson's War, which I enjoyed a lot. Actually, I would like to see it again. The other was P.S. I Love You.

P.S. I Love You is totally a "chick flick" (I saw it with two girlfriends and my 17 year old daughter) but it packed quite an emotional punch. It takes you through the first year after the main character, Holly, loses her husband, the love of her young life, to a brain tumor. She is guided through her grief with messages left to her, by her dead husband, and secretly delivered.

The crying starts gradually, and by the end of this two hour movie, which surprisingly offers many opportunities for laughter, you hear open sobs throughout the audience. I did my fair share of weeping and was deeply affected by the portrayed emotions which were not unlike the ones I experienced when I suddenly lost my 38 year old fiance nine years ago. Some of the scenes so strikingly resembled ones I experienced, I shuttered.

I began to think, on my way home, about the universal experience of love and grief, and started to ask myself some questions. Do we ever truly recover from such a tramatic loss, or do we just manage to bury the hurt deep inside so that we can move on with our lives and be happy again? Once you have had a powerful, soulmate connection with someone, can you ever have another?

In need of a little cathartic crying? Go see P.S. I Love You......just remember the tissues!

The Day After

Ahhh....the cookies have been baked, the presents have been wrapped and unwrapped and the holiday meal has been cooked and consumed. I'm tired! How about you?

I hope everyone has had a wonderful holiday. Mine was lovely, but exhausting. For the last week my scissors have be on fire cutting paper and my pots and pans have been slamming. So, today I took the day off. I am lucky enough to have off from school for the entire week, so today was a day of total relaxation. I am embarassed to admit, I didn't even get out of my sweats today and I ate two, count'em two pieces of delicious pumpking pie! However, I did check out weight watchers on line and plan on joining on the first of the year.

I love the day after Christmas. I feel satisfied and content. It doesn't have anything to do with the gifts I was fortunate enough to receive; I'm not really sure why. I just really enjoy the aftermath of the hustle and bustle.

What do you do when the holiday is over? Travel? Movies? Any post holiday rituals?

Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays?

It has been a slow news week as far as my usual subjects are concerned, so I thought I would solicit your opinions on a topic that is always debated this time of year. What is more appropriate....."Merry Christmas" or "Happy Holidays?"

Yesterday, I was watching a Fox News program and caught a bit of a discussion on this topic. Ben Stein was discussing some research that had been done showing that stores that decorated for Christmas, and openly acknowledged the "Christmas Season" were experiencing higher sales volume than stores following a more politically correct tone of "Holiday Season." He also went on to say that it is his belief that it is the Christmas season because December 25th is Christmas Day not Holiday Day.

What do you think? Are you offended when someone says "Merry Christmas?" Do you extend the spirit of the season by wishing people "Merry Christmas" or "Happy Holidays?" Would you be more likely to shop at a store that promotes a holiday theme or a Christmas theme?

Take a minute to weigh in. I would love to know what you think! Have a great week!

Sunday Morning News Just For Us!

Good Morning Everyone

The pace is picking up and the rush to the gift giving finish line is on! Yikes......I actually had to venture out yesterday into the parking lot jungle. Sometimes it can't be avoided. The good news for retailers is the shopping malls were packed.

While at the mall, my husband and I took the time to do something I haven't done in a long time. I visited Santa! Ok, I didn't actually sit on his lap, but we watched as one by one, sometimes two by two, children made their way up to jolly old St. Nick. I loved it.

The Santa we saw was extremely patient and obviously loved what he does. He talked quietly and the children spoke to him. They stared into his eyes and listened intently sometimes just nodding their heads. Of course, their parents were beaming. It took me back to a long time ago when my children were small, and made me smile and wonder how time has passed so quickly. Visiting Santa and watching made me feel kind of warm and fuzzy.....and no, it wasn't a hot flash! It was just nice to take a break from the hustle of shopping and enjoy the happiness of others.

So, let's see what is interesting this week in the world of baby boomers.

Have a great week everyone!

Sunday Morning News Just For Us

Good Morning Ladies,

We are going to take a bit of a turn this week. Instead of strictly news this week, we are going to take a look at a few articles from some of my favorite boomer websites that are just plain old interesting and fun! There's no theme, just information that is timely for us. I thought I would mix it up a bit this week.
Have a great week. Remember....keep those stress levels down, shop online - don't fight those crowds, do something for yourself and have some fun.

Cyber Monday

First came "Black Friday" now we have "Cyber Monday." It seems that Monday, November 26th is designated Cyber Monday.....the heaviest day for online shopping. As I mentioned in my previous post, part of my plan to make my holidays less stressful is to do as much of my shopping as I can online. Actually, I started today and I thought I would pass along some of the sites I found. A couple of these are really great for sending gifts to people you may not have the opportunity to see, but want them to know you are thinking about them.

I have it set that so all you have to do is click on the box and you will go right to the site.

Cheryl & Co. Yummy stuff here! Love the pictures. The Popcorn Factory More great eats! I sent 2 today.

PersonalizationMall.com- 10% Off Every year my kids get a new ornament to add to their collection. When they leave to start their own homes, they will have their personal collection for their tree. I found some adorable, personalized ornaments for them here, and at a great price!

I was a shopping fool today, but at least I was able to do it in my pajamas!

Sunday Morning News Just For Us!

Thanksgiving is over and the race is on to find the perfect gifts, decorate, wrap, bake cookies and plan the perfect holiday meal. Some radio stations are playing Christmas music 24/7 and we are inundated with commercial after commercial. You can already feel the mania building. Geez.....how will we squeeze in the responsibilities of daily life without totally losing our minds?

Personally, I plan on trying to keep everything in perspective and find some balance this holiday season. I will try to do as much of my holiday shopping, as possible, online. Why spend the money on gas and fight the crowds? I will elicit the help of my daughter when it comes to decorating and baking.....she loves it, so that is not much of a chore for her. Most importantly, I will TRY to keep in mind what the spirit of the season is really about and not totally lose my mind!

In honor of the impending frenzy, much of this week's news is devoted to managing the stress. Happy reading and stay calm!

Happy Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. These past few days, as the weather has turned colder and more seasonal, I found myself taking deep breaths and turning my face upward to feel the chilly air blow across my face. There is a certain smell that I associate with this time of year. I can't quite accurately describe it, but I know what it is. It is the signal that winter is coming and the holidays are upon us.

On the actual day, I love the smell that knocks you over when you walk into the house and the aroma of turkey wafts through the air. The gathering of family, usually the same faces and same stories in tow each year, brings a sort of comfort that although some circumstances may have changed during the year, some things stay the same. My parents have passed on, and I have only one brother. This is the one day that we are certain to see each other. Today my son made the trek that so many college students make....he came home for the first time after being away for three months at college. For all of these gifts, I am thankful.

Now, you may be thinking that I am painting a picture of some type of Norman Rockwell scene; believe me it is not. If I allowed myself, I could go on and on about what is not right. However, I choose to focus on these things that I have instead of things I do not. I choose to be grateful for the many gifts I have been given, instead of dwelling on the way it is not.

Tomorrow, as I bid my students goodbye for a long weekend, I am painfully aware that for some of them it will be fraught with tension and unhappiness. (Holidays are good for that sometimes.) Heaven knows that there have been holidays that for one reason or another, were painful for me. I get it, but there is something else I get.....that no matter how dismal our situations may seem, there is always something for which we can be thankful....even if it is just turning our faces upward and feeling the breeze.

Sunday Morning News Just for Us!

Good Morning Ladies,

It feels good to be back in routine. After being away last week, there is a lot of news to catch up on. I hope this past week went well for all of you. I suffered a bit of the post vacations blues, myself, but ended my week on a high note. I had the opportunity to have lunch, yesterday, with an exceptional woman named Dotsie Bregel. Dotsie is the founder of the National Association for Baby Boomer Women and has an incredible website called Boomer Women Speak. She is quite a savvy boomer woman who made the step into the world of business five years ago, with the hopes of making an impact in the lives of boomer women, and she has done a fabulous job. We had never met in person, only via phone and email, but managed to chat away on life, children and business like we had know each other for a long time. Amazing thing about women....when we have something in common and mix it with good food, conversation seems to come so easily. Check out both of her sites and join in the fun and camaraderie...you won't be disappointed.

Afterwards, my husband and I did a bit of Christmas shopping. This is a first for me starting so early, but J.C. Penney had so many bargains, I couldn't pass it up!

Now onto what is new in the world of boomers, menopause and night sweats.....

Have a great week!

Do You Feel Guilty?

I was having lunch with two of my female colleagues yesterday and the topic of guilt crept into our conversation. Both of these women, who are well educated and in their mid forties, discussed openly how they felt guilty about something on a pretty regular basis. One even spoke of how she felt guilty about something every day. From small matters such as hating to pack her teenage sons' lunches, to large matters such as not having enough contact with her dysfunctional parents, she feels guilty.

As our conversation continued, some questions began to rise to the surface. Is this a female phenomenon? Do women feel guilty more often than men? Why do we feel guilty about so many things? How do we rid ourselves of these feelings of guilt? Could it be that our guilt is connected to our shedding of traditional roles?

How often do you feel guilty? What sends your guilt-o-meter over the top? And....if you live relatively guilt free, what is your secret?

Some Sedona Pictures

Here are the pictures from one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen. What a fabulous vacation!

Sunday Morning News Just for Us!

Greetings Everyone From Beautiful Arizona!!

Because I am away.....actually I am sitting in the Sky Harbor Airport, there will be no Sunday morning news as we usually know it.

I have just spent 4 of the most wonderful days with my husband, in beautiful Sedona. This was my sojourn to the energy vortexes in the hopes of feeling their power and strength. I was not disappointed! Sedona is one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen. The pictures do it no justice. The red rocks are truly a site to behold. Although I am definitely NOT what you would consider a "hiker," I did my share over the past few days with joy!

We stayed a fabulous resort called the Amara......just perfect. I did indulge is a much needed massage. Kudos to my therapist, Kris. When I asked for "deep tissue" she took it seriously! It felt incredible.

Yikes.....my plane is boarding already. Next post will include some pictures. Have a wonderful week ladies!

Sunday Morning News Just for Us!

Good Morning Everyone,

This was a weekend for me to celebrate. My company celebrated its first birthday! I have made it through the first year of doing business which from what I understand is something to celebrate. It has been a year of the proverbial blood, sweat and tears. However, if I had to do it over again, I would do it in a minute.

Opening Lunar Radiance has done more for me than I ever could have imagined. I have learned much about myself and my capabilities. I have had the opportunity to meet other fabulous boomer women who are taking risks, following their passions and proving that just because our "biological eggs" may not be abundant as they once were, they still have much to offer and possibilities to explore. I have written about this before in my article "Baby Boomer Woman Gives Birth."

I am not alone in my entrepreneurial endeavors. According to SCORE, women represent more than 1/3 of all people involved in entrepreneurial activities. Still not convinced, check out these statistics:
  • Between 1997 and 2002, women-owned firms grew by 19.8 percent while all U.S. firms grew by seven percent (Source: SBA, Office of Advocacy)
  • Women-owned firms accounted for 6.5 percent of total employment in U.S. firms in 2002 and 4.2 percent of total receipts. (Source: SBA, Office of Advocacy)

  • The number of women-owned firms continues to grow at twice the rate of all U.S. firms (23 percent vs. 9 percent). There are an estimated 10 million women-owned, privately-held U.S. businesses. The greatest challenge for women-owned firms is access to capital, credit and equity. Women start businesses on both lifestyle and financial reasons. Many run businesses from home to keep overhead low. (Source: SBA, Office of Advocacy and Business Times, April 2005)

  • Women are more likely to seek business advice—69 percent women vs. 47 percent men. (Source: American Express)

Wow! It is a great time to be a woman. So nurture your ideas, think outside of the box and follow you passions. Who knows what could happen. Now.....onto our news for this week.

Funny But True!

Someone sent this picture to me and I had to pass it on. So many of us boomer women are fighting the battle of the bulge.....I know I am. It isn't until I see myself in a picture that I have a reality check and realize that I have put on a few pounds, and boy they are stubborn. However, when I look in the mirror I see something different. I still think "Hmm...not too bad." Either I am extremely delusional or I have a highly developed self esteem. I prefer to believe the latter

While I am not completely happy with the extra love on my hips, I have finally gotten to a point where I am a bit more accepting of myself. I believe we need to strive to be healthy and fit, and yes I like when I can wear current fashions and feel good, but it is rather liberating not to have the blues just because my blue jeans are a bit snug.

What do you think when you look in the mirror?

Who Doesn't Love Something for Free?

Is there any woman who doesn't love to get something for free? Everyone knows that women are the major shoppers in the family, and with the holidays rapidly approaching, we will be looking for the best deals on our favorite products. I've put together a few of my favorite stores to shop who are offering free shipping or a free gift of some sort. Click on the pictures and check them out for yourself. Maybe you can get a jump on some of that holiday shopping!

Sunday Morning News Just for Us!

Whew.....what a busy week. My teaching job took me out of town this week to Baltimore, Maryland. Seizing the last days of beautiful weather, my colleagues and I had the chance to stroll the harbor and feast on some delicious food. We then spent two days at an education conference. I always love when I can mix business with pleasure. Why is it, though, that when on a trip, I always eat too much?

Here is a question for you moms. How do you help your children through disappointment?

My daughter, who is a senior in high school received her most recent SAT scores this week. Although she had attended a private tutoring class, and worked hard to prepare, her score was not what she wanted. Because of her major in physical therapy, many of the schools to which she is applying are private which means big $$$$$. Scholarship money is frequently determined by those SAT scores. She was sobbing.

I am a firm believer that everything works out the way it should, so I assured her of that, but my heart sank for her since she had worked so hard. As a teacher, I am always telling my students that "hard work and effective effort" account for the majority of student success. This was a tough one. So ladies....what do you do?

OK....enough of the personal stuff....let's take a look at what is happening in the world of baby boomers this week! Happy reading and have a great week!

Sunday Morning News Just for Us

Good Morning Ladies!

As I prepare for the busy, upcoming week, I can't help but be a bit reflective of this past one. Last week, I had the opportunity to be interviewed by Nan Russell for her webtalk radio show called "Work Matters." Nan and I spoke at length about the ups and downs of starting a business. As we spoke, the discussion took a turn and focused on the fact that I was a middle aged woman embarking into unknown territory. Many of you know that I am a full time school teacher who also runs a business. With no real, previous business experience, and a rather full plate, she wanted to know what motivated me and keeps me motivated to plunge into a new arena, despite the fact that I have another full time job, a husband and children. She asked, "How do you find the time?"

My answer was "Passion." I am totally passionate about being able to bring women relief and help for a problem that so many of us face (night sweats) at this time in our lives. I love being able to write about and share what I learn, every day, about events and issues that have an impact on our lives. However, what I realized was that on a personal level, Lunar Radiance has brought me so much more than I ever expected.

I am invigorated, every day by the challenge. I am excited when I network with other boomer woman and see the amazing things they are doing. I feel empowered and alive. It is like a totally new side of my brain has been awakened and I am able to tackle activities that I never dreamed of. I have always been a cautious person, a bit hesitant to take a risk, but for some reason, I am not afraid. It is a great time to be a woman....the possibilities for us are endless!

What are your passions? How are your actualizing your dreams? Do you know a woman who is pursuing her passions or dreams?

Have a fabulous week ladies. Here is what's new this week.........

Sunday Morning News Just For Us

Happy Sunday Everyone,

I must admit, I am blogging in my pj's (wicking of course....ha ha) and it is noon! I am quite lazy this morning, but I am loving it. As I wrote last week, sometimes my "get up and go" is a little bit slow, but I enjoy my Sundays just doing what I want. Only thing is sometimes the morning carries over into the afternoon.

I did some cooking this weekend and made one of my favorite appetizers, so I thought I would include it today. It is sort of a shrimp antipasto; I'm not quite sure what the formal title would be but it is DELICIOUS, and is a guaranteed hit with company. Also, I am looking for a great shrimp scampi recipe. So if anyone could help me out, I would really appreciate it.

Have a great week and bon appetite!

1&1/2 LB COOKED,PEELED & DEVEINED SHRIMP (Try to stay away from frozen...they can be mushy)
6 OZ. PROVOLONE CHEESE CUBED
1CAN LARGE PITTED BLACK OLIVES
MARINATE IN MIXTURE BELOW OVER NIGHT (Make sure to refrigerate in a sealed container. Mix periodically)

MARINADE MIXTURE:
1 CUP VEG OIL
2/3 CUP REAL LEMON JUICE
2 T DIJON MUSTARD
2 T SUGAR
11/2 TSP THYME LEAVES
1 TSP SALT

ADD ONE HOUR BEFORE SERVING:
4OZ GENEO SALAMI-CUBED

Sunday Morning News Just for Us

Good Morning Ladies,

I hope this morning finds you well and rested as you prepare to launch into a new week. I have finally recovered after my big birthday party weekend last week, but it makes me ask: "Why does it take me so much longer to recover?" I did have a couple of glasses of wine, but that wouldn't constitute a hangover. I'm talking about just being plain old tired for a longer period of time. Plus, I am slower on the cleanup.

In the old days I would have been whipping through the house; cleaning, straightening up and getting everything put away the very next day. Now I have a much more laid back attitude. "I'll get to it when I get to it," is my motto. As long as the food is put away and the dishwasher is running, I can move the chairs and put away those serving pieces later. Wow...that's a change in attitude.

But that's not all......as I was researching this morning, I realized a common theme again....change! Our tastebuds aren't as spunky as they once were....geez our taste buds are going too.... our bodies are more achy and we're drying up! Duh.....I guess that's why it's called "The Change."

I am determined to take this all in stride. Ok, my buds aren't as spunky, and I am a bit more achy, but I feel more alive and happier than ever. It's kind of nice not to be so driven to be the "queen of clean" and be more comfortable going with the flow. I think more about what I can do to have fun.

Today I will shop with my daughter for her homecoming dress, get a haircut, then come home and take a nap. Sounds like a fun plan to me! Hey...I kind of like this change in attitude!

Yikes....I am rambling this morning....so let me leave you with this question: "How do you 'embrace' this changing time in your life....physically, mentally and spiritually?"

It Is Better to Give Than to Receive

My apologies to those of you who check in regularly expecting to see "Sunday Morning News Just for Us." I was preempted by extreme exhaustion after giving my husband, who celebrated is 70th birthday, a surprise party.

My husband, who is 20 years my senior, is a man who comes from very humble beginnings in the mountains of Pennsylvania. His father was a coal miner and his mother did whatever she could to help make ends meet for their family. Growing up, life was somewhat stern and lacking frivolity. Although he has become extremely successful as an attorney and has enjoyed many of the wonderful things life has to offer, he never really had a party. So, I decided to give him a surprise.

Our house was filled with his children and grandchildren, other family and friends. His brother traveled from Buffalo to be with us. It was the most wonderful experience for me to see the look of surprise and joy on his face. His total shock and appreciation made what I thought was a small gift turn into something so much more. The evening was a total delight. My heart truly overflowed with the warmest feelings seeing his happiness. I have given good parties, before....actually I am know for giving wonderful parties, but this one was the sweetest.

Yes the food was wonderful and the ambiance was superb, but I was given a great gift, myself, just to see his childlike delight and happiness at receiving what so many of us have had the chance to experience.....something just for us and the validation that we are special, unique and worth celebrating. It is truly better to give than to receive!

PS....honey if you happen to read my blog this week......Happy Birthday. I love you.

Sunday Morning News Just For Us

Happy Sunday Morning to Everyone,

I hope your Sunday morning finds you rested and well. So many of us wear many hats and Sunday no longer represents "the day of rest." It signals one more day to get done chores before going back to work. I know that today I have cleaning my refrigerator and tons of laundry on my list! Doesn't that sound like fun? Are Sunday dinners at grandma's or simply just sitting as a family long gone?

How do you spend your Sundays? Do you still honor "the day of rest" or are you busy finishing up necessary jobs?

Now...onto the business of today. Let's take a look at what is "news" for us this week. (One of them is a particular favorite of mine....LOL)

Has Anyone Ever Been to Sedona?

Calling all travelers, I need some help. My husband and I are planning a trip to Sedona, AZ in early November. I am looking for advice on a great place to stay. Because I am basically a city girl, I have to admit I am a bit spoiled when it comes to accommodations, so I am looking for feedback on resort type places without breaking the bank.

So....let your recommendations flow! Thanks.

Happy Friday

Happy Friday Everyone!
I am so thrilled that the weekend is finally here! The weather on the east coast is supposed to be beautiful and I am looking forward to not waking to the alarm.

Even though I have nothing "special" planned, time with my husband and a little R&R is something for which I am grateful. I do find as I get older that I am learning to appreciate the small things more, and it takes less to make me feel happy. Maybe it is just learning to be happy in my own skin.

Have a great weekend everyone with whatever you do or don't do!

Sunday Morning News Just For Us

Ok.....I'm sorry! It's not Sunday morning, it's Sunday night, but I have a great excuse. My husband planned a date day/night for us yesterday, and I was really pooped this morning! Don't you just love when they surprise you? Geez, I am feeling so grateful today!

So let's get down to the business of our news. There is some interesting stuff here!

The Gratitude Dance

Those of us who are familiar with the Law of Attraction and The Secret, know that gratitude and being grateful everyday for what we have in our lives is important. From the smallest things such as having running water, to the largest such as having an abundance of financial wealth, it is so important for us to be grateful.

I found the greatest reminder today called the Gratitude Dance. It is a 3 minute, youtube video put together by two young guys in their 20's. What awesome spirit they have. You can't help but smile when you watch this! Have a great day. Click Here to watch the video.

Sunday Morning News Just For Us

First, let me start off by saying "Happy Grandparent's Day" to all of you who are grandparents. Actually, one of our stories of the week deals with what names grandparents like to be called. I called my grandparents Pop-Pop and Nana, and my children called my mother Nana as well. My brother's grandchildren call him Pop-Pop and his wife "Granny." So let me ask you, if you are a grandparent, what do your grandchildren call you? How did you pick that name?

Now, on to what is new for us this week.

Welcome Back to School

Welcome back to school for me! After what seems to be a very short summer I have returned back to school today. Yes...in addition to owning my business I am a full time high school special ed. teacher (26 years and going strong). There is always a sense of anticipation and excitement each September. I don't sleep the night before and I love the smell of freshly waxed floors...ok a bit weird, I admit, but it's part of the job.

For me, September is a signal of renewal....new year, new students and new beginnings. September is the signal for be to start charging my batteries. I love the idea that I get to start again and look forward to trying to improve and make things better for my kids. What gets you fired up about your work? What do you do to keep your batteries charged?

Sunday Morning News Just for Us!

Good Morning Everyone,

I know the west coast has been having a heat wave, but I do have to say that the weather here in the east is fabulous. How will all of you be celebrating Labor Day? I will be attending my friends "Boo Hoo Back to School BBQ" today. We are teachers and this weekend is always filled with mixed emotions for us. Even after 26 years, each September brings anticipation and excitement of what the new year brings, but I do hate the thought of getting up at 5:45 again! I am notorious for being a night person.

Ok, so let's see what has been happening this week.

Have a great holiday weekend everyone! Don't forget to speak up and write back. Let us know what you think!

Sunday Morning News Just for Us!

Happy Sunday Morning From Buffalo!

This weekend my husband and I traveled to Buffalo to attend the wedding of his godson. What a beautiful place. Thanks to the wonders of technology, I am blogging from the airport. Don't you just love it!

Since we were only 30 minutes from Niagra Falls, we made a quick visit...I had never been. The most beautiful site. The sound of the rushing water and the power of the falls truly makes you have a deep respect for the beauty and possible fury of nature. We had a wonderful time visiting with my husband's family, and witnessing the marriage. There is something so hopeful about watching a young couple start out. Their relationship is so pure and untainted by the world. It is so lovely and I wish Adam and Lorianne well.

Now...back to business. Let see what happened this week in the baby boomer world and the world of women in transition (nice way to put menopause and perimenopause)

Celebrating Abundance

Happy Sunday To All!

Usually I provide you with a list of current articles, but this Sunday I need to celebrate abundance and be grateful and I wanted to share it with you.

I am writing from one of the most beautiful places on the east coast.....Maryland's eastern shore. My brother and his wife have the most lovely home, and each year, my teenage daughter and I make our way here for a few days to celebrate and relax with other women in our family. We will spend the next couple of days, talking, reading, lounging and laughing...a lot of laughing!

As my daughter and I were driving here, we listened to fabulous music....a CD that she created with so many of my favorite songs. I was overcome with such joy and gratefulness. I am so lucky to have a daughter who wants to still spend time with me. I am so grateful that we have this time to spend together.

I feel the power of the abundance of family. We will share meals and snacks...many snacks and reminisce about times long gone by, and talk of our hopes for the future. We will do simple things, like playing cards and scrabble and if a storm rolls in, we will revel in nature's fireworks as the lightening dances across the Chesapeake. We will start our mornings by sleeping in, if we choose, and drinking our coffee and tea by the water.

For a brief time, we will take time out of our hectic lives to be together and enjoy.

As I write, a storm is moving in, so it would probably be smart of me to log off of my computer and join in the scrabble game, but I leave you with these thoughts: What do you have to be grateful for? From the smallest things to the largest, what abundance do you have in your life that you can celebrate?

Have a wonderful week ladies!

Why Do We Pay Attention to These Young Stars?

People have had a curiosity and interest about movie stars for ages. We are enamoured with their clothes and their romances. Their lives seem so glamorous that reading about them allows us to step into a fantasy for a little while. However, news for most of this summer has surrounded the trials and tribulations of overindulged, young women whose lives are out of control.

I for one am so tired and bored with their arrests and trips to rehab, and wonder what would happen if we, collectively, stopped giving them so much attention. The latest escapades of Lindsay Lohan, Britney Spears and Miss Hilton are so negative and sad. What would happen if we shifted our focus onto something more positive? What would happen if we paid more attention to those people, things and events that are making a postive contribution to the world?

We have all heard the sayings "negativity breeds negativity" or "like attracts like." Lets spend our time paying attention to stories and people that make us feel good, promote healthy ways of living and work consciously at RAISING vibrations in our lives. I know that you will be delightfully surprised at the results!

Girls In My Circle

The following is a forward that someone sent to me. I am not usually a fan of forwards, but this one is definitely worth sharing. I wish I knew who the author was so I could give her credit. If you recognize it and know who wrote it please let me know!

GIRLS IN MY CIRCLE
When I was little, I used to believe in the concept of one best friend, and then I started to become a woman. And then I found out that if you allow your heart to open up, God would show you the best in many friends.
One friend is needed when you're going through things with your man.
Another friend is needed when you're going through things with your mom.
Another will sit beside you in the bleachers as you delight in your children and their activities.
Another when you want to shop, share, heal, hurt, joke, or just be.
One friend will say, "Let's cry together," another, "Let's fight together," another, "Let' s walk away together."
One friend will meet your spiritual need, another your shoe fetish, another your love for movies, another will be with you in your season of confusion, another will be your clarifier, another the wind beneath your wings.
But whatever their assignment in your life, on whatever the occasion, on whatever the day, or wherever you need them to meet you with their gymshoes on and hair pulled back, or to hold you back from making a complete fool of yourself, those are your best friends.
It may all be wrapped up in one woman, but for many, it's wrapped up in several.
One from 7th grade, one from high school, several from the college years, a couple from old jobs, on some days your mother, on some days your neighbor, on others, your sisters, and on some days, your daughters.
So whether they've been your friend for 20 minutes or20 years, AND ONLY IF YOU'D LIKE TO, pass this on to the women that God has placed in yourlife to make a difference.

How to Love Exercise When You Really Don't

Ok, I know it is good for me, especially as a baby boomer woman. I know that muscle burns more calories than fat. I know how important it is to keep myself strong and fit. Why is it that I just don't like to exercise?

I hear women talk about how fabulous they feel after a great workout. I have yet to find the "exercise afterglow." I struggle with finding the motivation I need to get myself going. However, those little rolls of fat that are accumulating beneath the backstrap of my bra are definitely sending a message that this is something that needs to be done!

So, after I post this message, I will don my sportsbra, sneakers, shorts and favorite t-shirt, and pop in my newest work out DVD from The Firm (I hate the gym more than exercise) and embark on my next attempt at getting fit.

If you actually enjoy exercise, and have found something that motivates you to keep at it please let me know. What little mind games do you play to keep yourself motivated? What is your favorite way to keep fit?

The Love Affair Between Women and Their Shoes

How many pairs of shoes do you have? How many pairs of black shoes do you have?

Tomorrow my husband's daughter is getting married. Of course I needed the perfect dress. I opted for a little black number....you know.....the most flattering dress I could find considering the recent upward flux of poundage. Actually, I am pretty happy with it (thank God for Spanx!), but what shoes would I wear? I can't tell you how many pairs of black dress shoes I have, but this outfit calls for something different. Of course it does! I know that metallics are all the rage this season, but I am a bit too conservative. Since I love to dance (my hobby is ballroom dancing) I need shoes that will be ultra comfortable. Hmmm...fashion and comfort.

After dragging my husband from store to store, I found the perfect pair. A beautiful pair of Steve Madden, black satin, 2 inch, sling back pumps with tiny white polka dots. I instantly fell in love. Yes...I had found shoe nirvana! I gleefully requested my 7 1/2 delights only to be told they did not have my size. Drats...back to the drawing board. What now? We left the mall empty handed, but I was determined. Today I went back to the mall and began my search. Low and behold, I found them and to make the search even sweeter, they were ON SALE! Wow! The Law of Attraction was really working for me today. Now my outfit will be complete. I am actually more excited about the shoes than I am the dress.

What is it about women and their shoes? Even my 17 year old daughter loves to match her flip flops with her outfits. Is it genetic? When does the love affair begin?

So ladies....what's in your closet?

Sometimes It's Hard To Be A Mother

How do we help our children make sense of horrible life events? How do we, as mothers, make sense of them ourselves?

Yesterday, I received a phone call from my daugher who was at work. She was sobbing so hard that I could barely make sense of what she was telling me. A friend and classmate of hers was killed in a car accident. This 17 year old young man had the brightest future ahead of him. He was applying to the Naval Academy, he was going to start varsity football this year, he was preparing to visit other colleges this coming week. He was living the life that many of us dream of for our children. I knew him because I am a teacher at my daughter's high school. He was highly regarded as a student and known as a kind and generous person. He was also my daughter's first high school crush.

I immediately went to console my daughter. As I held her in my arms, I wanted so desperately to be able to find the right words to say to her, but they were hard to find. It was and is painful for me to watch her as she experiences her first loss of a contemporary.

Over the last 24 hours my thoughts have also been drawn to his mother. As a mother, the lioness whose mission is to protect and love her children, how must she feel? I cannot even begin to imagine. We are never supposed to bury our children. It feels totally out the of natural order, but yet it happens.

Life lessons can be so difficult for our children and for us as well, but in this craziness I am sure there is something to learn. The abrupt end to the life of this young man, may very well serve as lesson to all of us, but in our immediate grief, we cannot see it. We must remain open to receive it and appreciate it.

How Did You Spend Your 4th of July?

Yesterday was such a great day. I had the good fortune to spend the day with two of my women friends, and even though the fireworks may have been dampened by the rain, the spirit of comraderie could not.

Since the three of us are all participating in a book group focusing on the book "Ask and It Is Given" a book focusing on the law of attraction, we spent a good part of the day talking about it, but there was more. As we munched our way through a bevy of food....of course a girl's gotta eat...we talked about our lives...past, present and future and celebrated "freedom." Not just the freedom that we were celebrating regarding our country, but the freedom we now have as "baby boomer women." We are all in the process of creating something, and very excited about the possibilites that the future holds.

I always leave those gatherings with my girlfriends feeling so blessed and grateful.

How did you celebrate freedom? What does a typical gathering of your girlfriends look like? What do your friendships mean to you?
